About Crete
The island of Crete is the largest island in Greece and it separates the Aegean from the Libyan sea, marking the boundary between Europe and Africa. It has everything tourists or (potential) inhabitants are looking for: incredibly blue sea, white sandy or rocky beaches, the majestic White Mountains rising in its center, plateaus split by deep gorges which end up in fertile valleys.
Facts on Crete
Geographical location
Crete is nearer the Equator than the Northern African cities of Tunis and Algiers. Crete is the largest Greek island, 168 miles long by 38 miles wide, at its widest point.
Climate
On average Crete has 300 sunny days per year. The mild Mediterranean climate brings temperatures of about 30°C in the summer and about 10°C in the fiercest winters. This type of climate is said to be one of the healthiest in the world.
The Prefecture of Chania
The Prefecture of Chania, which lies in the North-Western part of the Island of Crete, has a unique beauty: finest sandy beaches, wild gorges, caves, endemic plants and animals, olive trees and orange trees orchards that stretch for miles on end, and above all this breathtaking combination of sea and mountains.
Besides the busy touristy spots, one can still find time-forgotten villages, churches and monasteries, fortresses and castles.
The City of Chania
Chania is the second largest city of the island, with a history that starts in times immemorial and whose vestiges can be encountered everywhere you go. The city, built on the ancient ruins of Minoan Kydonia, is surrounded by Byzantine and Venetian walls and its architectural heritage, which reflect different periods of occupation, give the city a unique atmosphere.
In the old town, along the narrow tiny streets, you can have a traditional meal sitting at a small table outside a taverna, listening to the lyra and buzuki players playing and singing old traditional Cretan songs, or enter the myriads of shops selling works of local craftsmen and artisans.
The Harbour with its old Venetian walls and lighthouse is the emblem of this amazing city. Also, the small fish harbour is also a nice place to take a stroll and watch its busy life.
Other places of interest in the Prefectura of Chania
If you are looking for most amazing beaches and clearest waters, then the chain of small towns and villages on the Western coast are worth of attention: Tavronitis, Kastelli, Falassarna, Elafonissi, or Kalives, to mention just a few of these places. If, on the other hand, you are in love with the mountainous dramatic landscape, then any of the sparse villages in the Lefka Ori range can be a holiday home for you. From the mountains, one can have the most majestic views of the sea in the distance.
People here are hospitable and as soon as you meet them they make you feel at home. No wonder why this blessed place always casts a spell on visitors.
